How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters?

“Twice a year” is the answer everyone gives — and for many homes it is wrong. The real gutter cleaning schedule depends on three things: your trees, your climate, and whether you have guards.

The baseline schedule

Minimum: late spring and late fall, after seed drop and after leaf drop.
Heavy tree cover: three to four times a year. Pines shed needles continuously; sweetgums drop seed balls; oaks drop tassels in spring and leaves for months.
With quality micro-mesh guards: once a year or every other year, mostly to clear fine grit and check the system.

Climate adjustments

Storm-prone Gulf Coast (think Houston): clean before hurricane season. A clogged gutter in a tropical downpour overflows thousands of gallons exactly where you do not want it.
Snow country (think Chicago or Denver): a thorough fall cleaning before the first freeze is non-negotiable — debris plus snowmelt equals ice dams.
Monsoon deserts (think Phoenix): even sparse debris bakes into a dam. One cleaning before monsoon season usually suffices.

What skipping cleanings actually costs

A $150 cleaning feels optional until you price the alternative:

Fascia and soffit rot: $1,000–$4,000
Foundation repair from chronic pooling: $4,000–$12,000+
Basement water remediation: $2,000–$10,000
Mosquito and pest problems: standing water in clogged gutters breeds mosquitoes in as little as a week

Signs you are overdue

Water sheeting over the gutter edge during rain
Plants or moss visibly growing in the gutter
Sagging sections (wet debris is shockingly heavy)
Staining on siding below the gutter line
Birds or pests frequenting the roofline

The smart play

If cleaning twice a year costs you $200–$600 annually, gutter guards often pay for themselves in three to five years — and eliminate the ladder risk entirely. Otherwise, set calendar reminders for June and November, or book a recurring service with a local pro and never think about it again.
